Malu, New Painting For July 2015

Aloha Friends and Family, Here is the new piece Malu which means Shade and Peacefulness in Hawaiian. Malu is 18x24 inches and is laminated layers on a reenforced box frame that has a 1.5 inch of Hawaii's famous Curly Koa Wood on it's sides. This piece was inspired by a sketch from my imagination last month. So this young woman was not actually a real person, until now of course. All the layers you see were cut using my Hungi To (Japanese Wood Knives) and slowly built up layer upon layer. After the final layer I apply many coats of black and red gesso. 22k Genuine Gold leaf is then gilded to the red Gesso which I later glazed with transparent glazes. The woman holding the Maile Lei I painted with oils. Later once dry a high solid specialty clear coat covers the Koa sides and face of the painting. This piece maybe viewed at the Halele'a Galleryhttp://www.haleleagallery.com here on the island of Kauai. Thank you all for your support and interest in my work and I look forward to creating more happy golden art pieces. Troy Carney
